Sam Powell talks to horses sam-powell-hat

EQUINE CONSULTANT/CLINICIAN
HORSE RELATIONSHIP
THERAPIST & INTERPRETER

“There’s nothing mystical about it; no voodoo, no magic.   It’s understanding the ‘language of the horse.’”

THOUGHTS PHILOSOPHY

  • Humans have opinions. Horses know the facts.
  • A horse is never wrong--everything he does comes from the horse’s perspective.
  • Work to understand the horse’s instincts. To know them is to understand them.
  • When asking a horse to do something, seek an interactive response, not a reactive response.
  • Humans need to accept responsibility for a horse’s poor behavior; it’s a reflection of their mistakes.
  • Learn to be gentle without being weak and be strong without being harsh.
  • The horse is “sensible;” he can detect your energy as soon as you walk into the barn.
  • Horses accept change better than humans do.
  • There is no piece of equipment or tack that will “fix” your horse.
  • Learn to teach the horse from his understanding, not yours.
  • You can break a horse and still keep his spirit intact.
  • The difference between a trainer and a horseman is that the horseman learns from the horse.

TIPS & SUGGESTIONS

  • Practice awareness. “See” the horse.
  • Take the time to understand the horse, his culture and his language.
  • Learn to motivate change without fear or abuse.
  • A horse has to “get ready” to do something. Know where your horse’s feet are and how he’s physically positioned so that you know the appropriate time to ask.
  • Have patience, respect the horse, and remember the 3 R’s:
    Request • Response • Release
